Hindu Student Council Reorganizes at the University of Houston

Hindu Students Council (HSC) is a platform at college levels to promote Hindu values. More than a decade old, the forum has expanded from a group of few committed volunteers to include thousands of students, both Hindus and non-Hindus, in over seventy campuses nationwide today. Houston, which is marked by one of the most active and progressive Hindu communities in the nation today, could not remain untouched by the HSC wave.

Hitesh Divecha, Payal Shah, Arti Divecha, Bhavin Divecha, and Smiral Saheba have taken the initiative to reorganize the HSC chapter in the University of Houston.

“A forum like HSC is a must for U of H main campus, which has thousands of Hindu youngsters as full and part-time students, to serve as a chord to tie people with similar values”, says Hitesh, president of the local chapter.

"The values of Hindu dharma shall be cherished and preserved for eternity.  It is not a just a religion; it's rather a way of life and every Hindu heart should be aware of this. I definitely consider the presence of HSC essential at our University", says Payal, vice-president of the chapter.

Currently, the chapter has a membership of about 30 and meets every Thursday afternoon. Apart from their regular meetings, the chapter plans to hold seminars, host special events and perform community service to enlighten the minds of its members with new, interesting, and essential facts about Hindu dharma.

“We want to provide opportunities to our members to learn about Hindu heritage through various activities, events and projects”, says Arti, secretary of the chapter.

“Unfortunately it seems that we are losing awareness about our tradition from one generation to another” continues Payal, “and in a country that is so far away from India, if we do not make conscious efforts we might lose it even before we know”.

The local chapter has been taken with enthusiasm by most of the local India groups.  India Culture Center, the umbrella organization of Indian organizations in Houston, did not hesitate to extend a hand of support to the newborn chapter.

“Affiliation of HSC with ICC has brought in a fresh wave of young ideas and enthusiastic volunteers in our active community”, says Ramesh Cherivala, president ICC.

“Our religion is a part of our identity; we believe that HSC will allow us to learn more about ourselves and who we are”, says Bhavin, the treasurer of the chaper.

“HSC is certainly not exclusive for Hindus but is meant for anyone who wants to experience the values of Hindu dharma, feel complete and content with who they are and where they come from”, continues Hitesh, “We are here to spread the wealth, the wealth of Hinduism.”

HSC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. In Texas, HSC is present in UT Austin, Texas A&M, Bellaire High School (Houston) and U of H main campus.
